Fifth grade had a powerful lesson about tenacity, perseverance, and our math mindset with Mr. Hogan! We started by reading I’m Trying to Love Math and talking about how math can sometimes feel hard, frustrating, or even a little scary. Students wrote down some of their negative feelings and frustrations about math, and Mr. Hogan reminded us that hard doesn’t mean impossible and that struggling is part of learning.

Then we were ready for a fresh start! With Mr. Hogan supervising, we safely burned our papers as a symbol of letting go of those negative feelings about math. We are starting fresh with a new mindset: We can do hard things. We can learn from mistakes. We can ask for help. And most importantly, we don’t give up!

Thank you, Mr. Hogan, for helping our fifth graders see that being good at math doesn’t mean everything comes easily—it means showing TENACITY and continuing to try!
